Save money
& much more

85% of the electricity used to power Australian households is made by burning coal, which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This greenhouse gas pouring out from power stations is by far Australia's biggest single contributor to the global climate change threat, and we all play a part in the problem.

We can all be part of the solution too. Using our energy wisely, especially in our homes and workplaces, is essential to reduce climate change impacts on our natural environment and to our daily lives.

If you haven't got this connection already, you'll be getting the message more and more through your wallet. Electricity prices are rising rapidly along with other energy sources like petrol and natural gas. And whilst it's hard to change our daily habits, every one of us can save money and help the planet by using less energy.

We're told we can all save 20%

These days there is no shortage of government officials, academic experts, energy utilities, green groups and others telling us how our 'bad habits' are wasting electricity and making climate change worse. They have a point. Reliable estimates suggest 20% or more of the energy used in the average Australian household is wasted by leaving things on when we're not really using them!

What difference does 20% make?

The answer is 'plenty!' The average Australian household with 2.5 people currently pays about $1200 a year for their electricity and uses 8,000 kilowatt hours (kWh). To supply that electricity for just one year, about 6 tonnes of coal needs to be burnt which releases over 8 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Even the 'easy' efforts in saving the energy we normally waste around the house make a big difference. Have a look at the chart and think what your household could save.

But we can't manage what we can't measure!

But householders get little by way of real incentives or the knowledge they need to eliminate this waste; to change behaviour, buy more efficient appliances or to save money and to cut pollution. When we flick a switch at home, the CO2 from the power station is invisible and our use of electricity only becomes apparent in a complicated energy bill four times a year. How can we take real control of our energy if we can't see how much we're using when we use it!
