Wattwatchers - often working in tandem with our SaaS Partners - creates integrated sensor-to-switch systems that enable energy observation, control and services with utility grade data in real-time over the internet.
This underpins an Internet of Things (IoT) value creation loop for energy that is anchored by the Real Time Data from the Wattwatchers system and the amazing Auditor series meters.
As the Technology Overview highlights, the enterprise-quality systems that Wattwatchers supports stretch across three key dimensions:
1. Sensors on the Ground
ACQUIRE AND TRANSPORT: The Auditor series of Wattwatchers Real Time Data energy management meters are the sensors on the ground, providing the data acquisition and 'transport' layer. Auditors are very compact-sized, utility-grade digital meters with in-built 3G, WiFi or LoRa communications that operate totally independently of regulated utility billing meters and their data systems. The Auditors have to be installed - hardwired in to meter boxes or distribution boards - by qualified electricians to monitor energy flows at the circuit level. They must be configured to transmit to the data aggregation and analytics layer in the Cloud, and also to receive information back such as over-the-air software upgrades and in some cases switching instructions.
2. Brains in the Cloud
AGGREGATE AND ANALYSE: The mission critical 'intelligence' is located in Cloud-based software-as-a-service solutions such as Wattwatchers' solar performance monitoring partner, Solar Analytics, and other energy management dashboards and applications. They are the brains in the Cloud. As an example, Solar Analytics takes energy flow data from Wattwatchers devices for solar PV output and whole of home consumption and grid import-export, aggregates it with weather data and its own complex algorithms, analyzes the combined information, then initiates actions such as advice and alerts to solar system owners and managers. This has machine learning capabilities, becoming increasingly accurate the more systems it monitors and the longer the monitoring continues. Such solutions are progressively extending their functionality to include remotely controlling circuits based on information from the analytics layer.
3. Control from Anywhere
ACTIONS: The final dimension is the action layer. The actions that flow from the analytics layer can include presentation of value-added information via data visualization interfaces that display via web browsers and Apps on computers and mobile devices; email and SMS alerts where some more urgent action is required; and remote on-off or up-down triggering of switches back on the ground to control energy flows at circuit level. This allows switching, steering and shifting of energy loads for solar, battery storage, major appliances and grid connections - all vital elements in the new, digital-and-distributed energy operating environment. Wattwatchers is incorporating switches and load control functionality into its system.
